Matangi

Matangi was born in the latter part of 2020 as Nandini's first calf. She was all hale and healthy from the beginning, and happend to come to this world soon after Amavasya and Bala, and a little bit before Mielikki and Manjali. Hence, she never had a lack of comrades to go along with.

She lacked, however, from the beginning sufficient nutrition. Her mother, Nandini, was for perhaps natal condition, unable to produce enough of milk. At least, we hardly milked her for our sake but allowed Matangi to have it all instead. Still, her growth was a little bit slower than for the others in her age-group.

Instead of having a healthy and strong body after one-and-a-half years,, she has grown to resemble her mother's feeble looks. Just like almost all the others in our herd, Matangi also went through the Foot and Mouth Disease in late 2021, but for her the effects seemed more severe and the recovery much slower. To add to the misfortunes of this one, she fell into a ditch and hurt her right back leg to the extent that for more than two weeks she was not able stand up on her own. This has now, thanks to Krishna, healed.

However, we are daily giving her nutrient supplements along with all the other food and seeing her grow stronger and more stable. Matangi is truly in need of your help and sustenance. Her monthly rations and supplements cost around Rs. 2,500/-. You can help her and us at:

Nandini

Nandini belongs to the group of first-comers of Divya Rasa. In the early 2019, she arrived as a one-year old, looking little lost and having tough time to cope with the heat of Tiruvannamalai during the summer months. She befriended from the beginning with Kashi Narayanan. Their companionship didn't limit to the hours spent together when tied down, but they always seemed to move together, when either grazing on our land or in the forest.

From this perspective it seemed odd, that she didn't get pregnant any time soon, as Kashi had already proven to be a man with this measuring stick. One vet even said that judging by her flimsy and weak looks, and general exhaustion, which was present from the very first days, she would be barren and never give birth.

We didn't much worry about this, as there were enough of mouths to feed and Nandini's struggle to cope with the heat was already enough to witness and support. Maybe it is in her blood and genes, or then she was just born like this, but she never had the stamina to face the heat of summers and even in the cooler seasons, she tended to fall sick, unlike her externally look-alike companion Kashi.

Against all the odds, in the early 2020, we started to have indications, that she might have been pregnant and late that year Matangi was born. Even if Matangi was a child of cool and green monsoon season, Nandini could not produce enough milk, so it was immediately decided that we will not milk her, but let all the milk go to the first-born, Matangi.

It is again summer (April 2022) and Nandini is back to her weak state and struggle. Despite all the extra feed we are giving to her, she has long back stopped giving milk to Matangi, which is not at all how the other cows have been going on. She also had a serious case of Foot and Mouth Disease during the monsoons of 2021. Watching the continuous struggle of a living being is of course a little bit harrowing, but we have noticed that with all the extra food given to her, also her spirits and constitution have improved. Nandini's monthly intake costs approx. Rs. 3,000/-. We are asking your help and support to make the best for Nandini's sake at:
