Manjali

Manjali, named after the Vana Durgai of Mantralayam, is the first-born of Karunya. It so happens that the Guru of Mantralayam, Raghavendraji, is known of his endless compassion (Karunya) towards his disciples and humanity in general. It so happens that Manjali was born soon after we were introduced to this holy town and its central force, Raghavendraji. To honor these events and everything related to it, we named the calf according to the guardian deity of the Matha of Mantralayam.

Manjali is much like her mother in her nature, and luckily maybe a lot less like her father (Kashi Narayanan). If was Karunya little bit of a loner before Manjali's arrival, so became she a true companion for her mother. The two of them being always with others, but maybe because of the deep inheritance of the local forest-dwelling cow breed, they stand out of any herd due to their high alertness, light and agile step, and constant distance to any human being.

We have never felt any threat or discomfort from the mother-daughter pair, but they are duly keeping their distance and maintaining their personal space. In that sense they are very "Finnish" by their nature.

Manjali's monthly rations cost around Rs. 2,500/-. You can help her and us at:

Karunya

Karunya is also of the original bunch. She is a 100% pure native breed called Kangaya. They are known for the resilience, ability to bear the hot weather and sprint and jump. It is said that a Kangaya cow can jump over a fencing of 6 feet high. We have obviously done something right with her, since she is still sticking around with us.

In the beginning she was the trouble maker of the lot. We wished to keep them free every once in a while, but catching this stubborn, reclusive and extensively aware piece of a cow was a tough task every night. Sometimes two of us would run around with lassos to try and capture her to tie her down for the night. Ironically, she would do her running and make us look like fools as long as she wished for, before trodding to her space and allowing us to tie the knots.

After having Manjali in 2021, Karunya became somewhat different personality. When we were milking other cows,, she would reach out for a little scratching or caressing, and I can't remember her creating hustle while milking (unlike many other ladies of the house).

Still today (October 2022) she is a hard-to-catch, but she readily comes for a scratch and loyal to her habits, will take her place in the cow-shed on her own will and time.

Karunya's monthly rations cost around Rs. 3,000/-. You can help her and us at:
